A former charity-run bar and restaurant in Maybole has been saved for the community - with hopes of the building being transformed into a youth club one step closer to realisation.
The Carrick Centre Board and Carrick Community Leisure Group (CCLG) have reached an agreement to transfer ownership of Goudie's in the town’s Whitehall.
The premises closed its doors in November last year due to rising energy costs, with CCLG announcing earlier this year in March of their plans to resurrect it into a safe place for youngsters aged 11 and over to socialise and enjoy activities.
Marguerite Hunter Blair, chair of the Carrick Centre, said at the time that the Carrick Centre was “very aware” that there “isn’t a dedicated space for young people in Maybole and the villages, specifically aged 11 and over.”
She previously said: “We know that some of the older children and young people go to Ayr to the Ark and Girvan to Girvan Youth Trust.
“Young people are prepared to get a bus or train because they’re so desperate to get access to things to do, so it just shows there is a need.”
Now, the Carrick Centre Board of Directors have expressed their delight at the acquiring the building.
Speaking on their behalf, Marguerite said: “The Board are excited by this fantastic opportunity to bring about positive change for all our young people and to respond to the needs articulated in the local strategy for youth in North Carrick.
“Over the summer we will be continuing our conversations with our young people, members of the community, local partners, and funders to ensure that we maximise the potential of this wonderful building and outdoor garden. There will be regular updates provided as the process moves forward.”
Mark Fletcher, CCLG chairman, said: “We are very pleased with this outcome as the building, which we and the funders worked so hard to save, will remain as a very valuable community asset, providing a dedicated facility for the young people of the area - a space that they can call their own.”
Councillor Brian Connolly expressed his enthusiasm for the development, and added: “We are delighted that such an important building in the town streetscape has a bright future and the Carrick Centre, with its long history of success, will be a worthy custodian.”
