Ainsdale could soon be wiped off Southport’s political map when it comes to choosing a new MP.
Under revised plans released by the Boundary Commission, which is carrying out a review into constituency boundaries across the country, Ainsdale would become part of Sefton Central constituency instead of Southport.
The plans were described by Sefton Council’ s Liberal democrat cllr and leader of the opposition, Cllr John Pugh, himself a previous MP in Southport as a “brave new world” where “mathematics has triumphed over community.”

Under the plans Southport would instead take in large tracts of rural Lancashire stretching up to an area close to Lytham St Annes in the north and Tarleton in the east.
In Sefton Central, Ainsdale’s gain would become Aintree ’s loss – which would become part of neighbouring Walton consistency instead.
Very little would change in Bootle, according to the plans drawn up by the Boundary commission, which are now out for the latest and final round of consultations.
Very little has changed from the initial boundary changes first proposed by the commission and which were subject to previous public consultation – the main exception being the Melling area.
Initial proposals had Melling joining the Norris Green constituency – but in the latest proposals it will stay within Sefton Central.
People have until December 5 to comment on the proposals on the Boundary Commission website, the last time people can make their views known before the process moves on towards parliamentary approval.
Nationwide, the changes will mean an extra 10 parliamentary seats, bringing the total number of constituencies up to 543. Final recommendations are due to to go to parliament next summer.
