Southport FC call off match for 'wildest reason' as boiler breaks

A football club said it had "no option" but to call off a match after a boiler failure.

Southport FC said their National League North match against Spennymoor Town was postponed as the boilers in the players' dressing rooms left them with no hot water for showers.

Problems arose for the club when the spare parts needed to fix the boiler were not available. The club have now announced that the match has been rescheduled for April.

Spennymoor Town thanked Southport FC for "ensuring this decision was made as early as possible to avoid the unnecessary travel of our supporters, players, staff and officials."

The postponement caused quite a stir on social media., where Mike said: "Cancelled cause no hot water, hope you've plenty of conditioner and moisturiser for the next game". Roland from Liverpool commented said: "Unbelievable".

Jermain said: "That is the wildest reason for a postponement I’ve ever seen but at least it’s early notice." Michael from Southport commented: "Our club could be described as a bit of a soap opera at the moment."

In a statement, the club said: "Due to a boiler failure in the players’ dressing rooms resulting in no hot water being available, we have been left with no option but to inform the National League and our opponents Spennymoor Town that tonight’s game will have to be postponed."
