Southeast Missouri State Upsets No. 5 Seed Arkansas

Arkansas Tech basketball

On Sunday, Southeast Missouri State pulled off a stunning upset as they defeated No. 5 national seed Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament. The Redhawks secured a 6-3 victory in an elimination game, knocking out the Razorbacks, who were the highest-seeded team to be eliminated. This win marked a significant achievement for Southeast Missouri State, joining Evansville and Grand Canyon as No. 4 regional seeds that advanced to the Sunday night finals.

SEMO faced off against Kansas State in Fayetteville, Arkansas, while Evansville played at East Carolina in Greenville, North Carolina, and Grand Canyon took on West Virginia in Tucson, Arizona. This victory propelled SEMO to their first-ever regional final, with Andy Sawyers, the Redhawks' coach, notably defeating his former mentor, Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn.

The Razorbacks' early exit from the tournament was unexpected, given their strong season performance. Despite winning the SEC West and boasting top talent like pitcher Hagen Smith, the team struggled late in the season, culminating in a 4-9 record since early May. Van Horn attributed the team's fatigue and mental strain to their underwhelming performance in the regionals.
