Follow live coverage as Southampton face Crystal Palace today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.
The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. 21:17BIG CHANCE! Ramsdale was quick to react to a poor back pass that had Nketiah’s eyes light up. Bednarek played the ball back to his keeper but did not see Nketiah lurking. Ramsdale rushed out and slid in to stop the striker getting a shot away as he could only nudge the ball goalwards. The ball bounced off the keeper back off the striker and wide of the goal. Huge let off for the hosts.

21:10Southampton don’t have the energy to continue their approach on the counter as their players are starting to fatigue as less are committing to the attacks. A number of changes may be on the way for the hosts as they look to hold onto this result.

21:00Cries for a penalty by Crystal Palace. Sarr went down in the penalty area as he looked to get on the end of a Eze through ball but the chasing Stephens stretched out his foot. There were appeals by a number of Palace players but Stephens had just got his toe to the ball and the referee waved away the protests correctly.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:58Onuachu is still causing Crystal Palace problems. They are struggling to deal with the long ball as Onuach is either winning the header or a Southampton player is winning the second ball from a defensive header.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:56HUGE CHANCE! Eze drags his effort wide of the near post. Sarr played the ball to Eze after a long mazy run, attracting the attention of four Southampton defenders. This left a lot of space for Eze just inside the penalty area, but as he struck his effort he got it all wrong and it went wide causing Ramsdale no problem in goal.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:52The second half has carried on from where the first half ended. Palace have gone about controlling the possession while Southampton look to hit on the counter, capitalising on Palace’s sloppy final pass.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:48Southampton get the second half under way.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:48Crystal Palace have controlled possession with 60.2% of possession in the first half but not used the ball in the correct areas of the pitch. They have struggled with their final ball which had led to a lack of chances being created, as witnessed in an xG of 0.28 from their three efforts, with only one of them on target. Compared to Southampton, who have been more direct and opportunistic in their approach, have created an xG of 0.4 from their six efforts, two of which were on target. Palace will need a much better performance this second half to get anything out of this match and continue their unbeaten away record.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:44Southampton enter the break with a deserved 1-0 lead. Crystal Palace look a shadow of the team that beat Fulham in the FA Cup at the weekend and the hosts have capitalised on this. Crystal Palace started the brighter of the sides and could have taken the lead in the opening two minutes when Mateta struck the bar. The Frenchman had carried the ball for 10 yards to the edge of the penalty area before striking but he had to watch his shot clatter the crossbar and be cleared to safety. Palace looked to be in control for much of the half but this allowed Southampton to grow in confidence. The hosts would take the lead in the 20th minute through Onuachu with his fourth Premier League goal of the season. He met a Fernandes cross on the penalty spot and it had enough power on it that Henderson could only palm the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The game would lack much action following this until Ramsdale pulled off a fine reactionary stop to deny Mateta from equalising in the 36th minute. The Frenchman took a Clyne cross along the floor under control in the area and swivelled to strike it at goal for the keeper to get done sharply and hold the ball and maintain Southampton’s lead into the break.

20:34HALF TIME! SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 CRYSTAL PALACE
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:32Onuachu has been key to the Southampton performance thus far. He is being used an outlet at times with the long ball, as he is constantly winning headers to flick the ball on. He has also attempted three shots so far, with one of them ending up in a goal.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:30Southampton are starting to find joy going forward in this game on the counter. They are starting to sit deeper and once they win the ball move forward at pace. While they have yet to create anything of note they are starting to find space and cause problems. It may be only a matter of time before they punish the visitors.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:27Wharton is getting frustrated after another Southampton player fouls him. The midfielder is the only player to have received a booking so far in the match but having been on the end of a number of fouls he is starting to question why an opposition player has not been cautioned too.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:25FANTASTIC SAVE! An incredible reactionary save from Ramsdale to keep Southampton in the lead. The ball was being passed around the edge of the penalty area before being played wide to Clyne. He played a cross in low that was controlled by Mateta on the edge of the six-yard box and he swivelled and shot towards goal. It looked like it was going to draw the sides level but Ramsdale was able to get down sharply first to deny the Frenchman’s shot before then reacting to grab the save and ensure no Palace player could strike home a rebound. Fantastic work by the keeper.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:18Southampton are deserved of their lead, having limited Palace to only one shot, which came in the second minute when Mateta struck the bar.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:16Crystal Palace seem to be struggling with their final ball. Having made 15 final third entries to this point in the match, but have only managed one touch in the box demonstrates their struggles in attack in this match.

20:06Southampton with the first shot on target, as a freekick is floated into the penalty area is met by Onuachu. The Nigerian could not generate any power behind the header and it was an easy catch for Henderson in goal.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
20:04While Crystal Palace look comfortable and in control, they have offered very little in an attacking capacity. The longer this goes on it will encourage the hosts that they can get a result from this game.

20:00Southampton look to be throwing caution to the wind as they know a victory is needed to keep what slim hopes, they have alive of remaining a Premier League side. This will explain their gung-ho approach to the match at this point.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
19:56The central midfield of Southampton is non-existent when Crystal Palace have possession. The hosts seem to be defending in two banks of five. One high up the pitch near the Crystal Palace defence but not pressing, while the other five are occupying defence. There is so much space between the lines for Palace.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
19:53Crystal Palace are in complete control, and Southampton look rattle after the early Mateta effort that almost gifted the visitors the lead.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
19:51OFF THE BAR! Mateta has left the goalframe shaking with his effort from just outside the penalty area. The Frenchman received the ball with a pass with the Southampton defender tight to his back, but Mateta used his strength to hold him off and turn to drive forward with the ball. He was able to carry the ball 10 yards as the space opened up and no defender cam to press him. Mateta then let fire on the edge of the box and it looked like it was going to float into the net but it cannoned back off the bar and away to safety. Southampton getting lucky early on.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace
19:24Crystal Palace enter the match off their fine display in the FA Cup, with a victory over Fulham. The Eagles can equal their best ever unbeaten run on the road in their league history of 10 matches, achieved four times previously (most recently April 1979 in the second tier), should they avoid defeat in this match. Crystal Palace are currently on a run of nine games unbeaten away from home in the league (W6 D3).
Southampton vs Crystal Palace
19:18Southampton enter this match knowing anything less than a win could see them relegated this weekend, which could see them make history as the earliest side in Premier League history if that were to happen and results go against them. Ivan Juric has lost all six of his Premier League home games as Southampton boss, one of only three managers to achieve this in the competition, along with Mick McCarthy and Vincent Kompany, who both lost their first seven. The former Roma manager will hope he can get a win to ensure he does not get this record and Southampton get above Derby County’s lowest ever points tally in the division.
