Southampton announce Ruben Selles departure as Russell Martin closes in on Swansea City exit

Southampton have confirmed they will not be renewing Ruben Selles' contract when it expires at the end of the season.

The Saints are understood to be close to appointing Swansea City's Russell Martin as their new boss, with reports elsewhere claiming a move could be done within the next few hours, after the clubs agreed a compensation fee believed to be in the region of around £400,000.

Selles took over at Southampton in February following the sacking of Nathan Jones, but was unable to keep the Saints in the Premier League, with the club's fate sealed by the recent 2-0 defeat to Fulham. Incidentally, Jones is one of the early names to be mentioned as a possible option for the Swans, although sources in SA1 have already cast doubt on those links.

But Martin is nevertheless destined to take over at the Saints, who have now confirmed they will not be renewing Selles' current contract, which expires at the end of the current campaign.

A statement read: “Southampton Football Club can confirm that it has held conversations with men’s first team manager, Ruben Selles, and decided that his contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of the season. The club wants to place on record its thanks to Ruben for taking on the managerial position at a difficult time for the club and for giving his all as we attempted to stay in the Premier League. Ruben will take charge of the team for the final game against Liverpool on Sunday at St Mary’s. We wish him all the best for his future career.”
