South Lanarkshire towns with highest number of sex offenders living in them revealed

New data from Police Scotland has revealed the number of sex offenders living in South Lanarkshire communities.

Topping the Scottish list of shame in South Lanarkshire is East Kilbride which shows 56 registered sex offenders (RSOs) residing in either the G74 or G75 post code area.

Within the G74 area (East Kilbride) there are 24 sex offenders, and in G75 (East Kilbride North) there are 32.

The second highest is the postal area G73 which covers Rutherglen, where 37 sex offenders live.

And with a few less, ML11 which covers Lanark and Lesmahagow, holds 33 RSOs.

The latest statistics show there are exactly 5752 RSOs in Scotland at present, and 16 of them are wanted as of March 31.

Of these, 4150 are living in the community and 1602 are either in prison or hospital.

Of the 16 wanted sex offenders, enquiries suggest 14 of them have left the UK.

In Hamilton, there are 30 sex offenders living in the area under the ML3 post code, with nearby Larkhall (ML9) having 21.

The G72 postal area which covers Blantyre and Cambuslang shows 32 RSOs, meanwhile ML8 covering Carluke has 16, and G71 which covers Uddingston has 17.

In the ML12 area, covering Biggar, there are three sex offenders living in the community, and in Strathaven (ML10) there are eight.

Meanwhile in North Lanarkshire, Motherwell and Wishaw have the highest number of sex offenders living in the community in Scotland according to the new police figures.

The highest amount of RSOs can be found in ML1, covering Motherwell, with 65 in the area according to the data.

Nearby ML2 - the postcode for Wishaw - has the second highest in Scotland with 55.

The force also releases figures for each police division which show Glasgow having the highest concentration of perverts with 956 located within the community, jails or hospitals.

Lanarkshire is next in the list with 731.

Police Scotland say sex offenders are ‘robustly managed’ and the risk of them reoffending is ‘extremely low.’

A statement from the force said: “Protecting the public is a priority for Police Scotland.

"While we can never eliminate risk entirely, we want to reassure communities that all reasonable steps are being taken to protect them.

“We put in place measures to minimise the likelihood of further sexual re-offending by RSOs and would seek to re-assure people that sexual re-offending rates remain extremely low.

“RSOs are robustly managed by the police and our partners through the multi-agency public protection arrangements, and subject to comprehensive risk assessment and risk management in the community.

“Police Scotland has units of dedicated officers specially trained for this task.”
