South Lanarkshire groups can apply for funding to help reach climate change goals

Community groups throughout South Lanarkshire are being encouraged to apply for new funding to help them work on climate change and food growing.

The grants form part of a £10m funding package of investments which are being taken forward by South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) in this year’s budget.

Community groups can apply to two funds available: The Climate Emergency and Resilience Fund and the Food Strategy Fund.

Council leader John Ross said: “When we approved our budget earlier this year our new investments included £2m for a Climate Emergency Fund and £300,000 for a Food Strategy Support Fund.

“That money is already being put to a variety of good uses, and now we are allocating a large chunk of it to help community groups through the new grants scheme.

"I hope it will encourage people across South Lanarkshire to think about what they can do in these vital ‘green’ areas.”

Local groups are now able to bid for grants for a variety of purposes, including buying gardening equipment for community food projects and starting up community recycling schemes.

Grants of up to £2500 for climate change projects will come from the £150,000 fund and grants of £1000 will be made available from a separate £20,000 food fund.

A fund of £39,000 is also available for groups to address climate adaptation projects.

To apply, groups should go onto the council’s Climate Emergency and Food Fund grants website.
