Elected members of South Lanarkshire Council have approved changes to its code of governance.
The Local Code of Corporate Governance outlines existing arrangements and how the council will continue to review the agreements and introduce improvements where necessary.
On Wednesday, councillors at the Risk and Audit Scrutiny Committee agreed to approve changes to the current code.
A range of revisions to the current code include updates to provide additional information on how the code fits in with the council’s annual review of governance arrangements.
Another change is that it will outline the alignment of the principles contained in the code with the council’s values.
Other changes include a section on policies, procedures and other documentary evidence which has been updated with changes identified through the 2020/2021 corporate governance self-assessment.
A governance framework was developed in April 2016 and established the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE).
To achieve good governance, South Lanarkshire Council should demonstrate that its governance structures comply with the framework and should develop and maintain a Local Code of Governance reflecting the principles of the framework.
A local code for South Lanarkshire was developed and approved by the council in May 2018. It is reviewed, updated and republished annually, in this year’s case, it will be amended.
Compliance with the code is also reviewed as part of the annual governance agreements.
