South Lanarkshire Council to fund struggling tenants affected by COVID

South Lanarkshire Council is offering grants to help tenants who have been financially impacted by the pandemic.

The Tenant Grant Fund is Scottish Government funding of £10m which is to be shared across all local authorities.

It is aimed at helping those renting in social and private homes who are struggling and falling behind in rent as a result of COVID.

The council will begin to offer its allocation of the fund to those in South Lanarkshire who are affected.

It aims to help tenants reduce or pay off rent arrears by granting them the funding, which will be paid directly to their landlord.

Tenants do not have to pay the grant back but they must agree to maintain payments to their rent moving forward.

A criteria set out by the Government must be met for the grant to be given to tenants; the grant is available to council, housing association and private tenants.

The tenant must have accrued rent arrears between March 23, 2020, and August 9, 2021, and be at risk of becoming homeless.

The grant is targeted at households who don’t have sources of support or who are vulnerable.

If you are a council or housing association tenant, your housing officer will notify you on whether or not you are eligible to apply.

If you rent a home in the private sector and would like to find out if you are eligible for the grant you should contact Y-People.

The council’s fund must be fully used by March 31, and will be given to tenants who meet the criteria, more information on eligibility and claiming the grant can be found here.
