South Lanarkshire Council launches new award for those who support veterans

South Lanarkshire Council has announced it will give awards out to those who support veterans.

Following Armed Forces Day on Saturday, the council has launched a new award to recognise volunteers who support Armed Forces veterans and their families.

Winners of the award will be announced in October this year but from next year they will be announced around Armed Forces Day.

Each year, four awards will be given out, one across each area of South Lanarkshire: Cambuslang and Rutherglen, Hamilton, East Kilbride and Clydesdale.

Council Leader Joe Fagan (East Kilbride Central North) said: “This award will recognise those people across South Lanarkshire who help our veterans, and their families, adjust back to life when they leave the Armed Forces.

“If you are aware of people who deserve this recognition in your community then please get in touch.”

The council’s Veterans’ Champion, Councillor Mark Horsham (Clydesdale South), said: “It is well-known that acclimatising to life following time in the Armed Forces can be difficult for many people.

“These awards are a small way of us saying our thanks for the invaluable work that goes on to make that process easier for veterans and their families.”

South Lanarkshire residents can nominate someone by providing specific details such as their name, address, phone number and email address, they must include why they think the person is deserving of the award.

Nominations can be made by emailing the council or writing to: Armed Forces Day Awards, Floor 2, South Lanarkshire Council HQ, Almada Street, Hamilton, ML3 0AA. The closing date for nominations is September 16.

Winners will be chosen by a panel of councillors which will be chaired by the Council Leader and will include the council’s Veterans’ Champion.
