Planning for a small-scale residential development in High Blantyre has been approved by councillors.
The application for planning permission in principle for a housing development on Main Street was approved by elected members on Tuesday (March 29).
Planning permission in principle is an application that allows a proposal – the specific proposal for the development will be made in due course by the applicant now that it has been approved.
The applicant wishes to submit a proposal for the erection of a small housing development with car access, parking and landscaping.
The development will include semi-detached and terraced houses and could potentially accommodate up to ten residential units.
Councillor Graham Scott (East Kilbride East) questioned the development on behalf of councillor Bert Thomson who couldn’t attend the meeting.
He said: “On High Blantyre main street, the traffic access, it is quite a busy street and Bert is worried about the numbers of units and cars going into the units and also the trees being felled for it, is there any mitigation we can do in relation to these concerns of councillor Thomson”
These concerns were addressed by council officers who revealed that the number of units are not set in stone and the council’s road’s services are satisfied with the proposals to access the site from the main street.
The issue with trees is covered in the application and the applicant aims to maintain the trees and natural environment as much as possible.
The current site is vacant and established within a residential area of High Blantyre.
Statutory neighbourhood notification was undertaken and eleven letters of objection and one letter of support were received.
The grounds of objection includes lack of privacy and overshadowing of nearby properties, noise disturbance and increased traffic – these concerns were countered by the council’s planning team and planning officers recommended approval of the planning.
