South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has announced his decision to lift the martial law order following a parliamentary vote that blocked the decree. The president stated that he will withdraw the martial law order as soon as he secures the necessary support from his Cabinet. However, due to the time constraints in South Korea, he has not been able to convene his full Cabinet to seek their backing for the withdrawal.
President Yoon also mentioned that he had already withdrawn the troops that were deployed to enforce the martial law order after the National Assembly voted unanimously, with a 190-0 decision, to reject the decree.
In his statement, the president criticized the opposition party for obstructing the government's actions and reiterated his initial justification for imposing martial law. Yoon had previously accused the opposition of initiating impeachment motions against government officials, which he claimed were aligned with pro-North, anti-state forces.
However, faced with significant and united opposition, President Yoon made a U-turn on his decision, leading to a hurried parliamentary vote and widespread condemnation from both his critics and members of his own party.
