The White House expressed relief after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol lifted the martial law declaration following the country's parliamentary vote to block it.
A National Security Council spokesperson stated, 'We are relieved President Yoon has reversed course on his concerning declaration of martial law and respected the ROK National Assembly's vote to end it.' The spokesperson emphasized the importance of democracy in the U.S.-ROK alliance and mentioned that they would continue to monitor the situation.
President Joe Biden has not yet made a substantive comment on the situation, which surprised US officials. He briefly mentioned to reporters that he was about to be briefed on the matter after delivering a speech at the National Museum of Slavery in Angola.
