A South Korean court has granted an extension of President Yoon Suk Yeol's detention due to concerns that he may destroy evidence in a criminal probe related to his declaration of martial law in early December. Yoon, who became the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested last Wednesday, is being investigated for alleged insurrection.
The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) requested the extension of Yoon's detention after he refused to be questioned. The Seoul Western District Court approved the detention warrant, citing concerns about the potential destruction of evidence.
Yoon can now be detained for up to 20 days under the new warrant. He is currently held at the Seoul Detention Center. Despite efforts by the CIO to interrogate him, Yoon has so far refused to attend questioning, raising uncertainty about his cooperation with investigators during his extended detention.
