South East Central Railway implements automatic signaling system to streamline rail traffic, enhance efficiency

RAIPUR: The South East Central Railway (SECR) has ushered in a new chapter in train operation with the implementation of an automatic signaling system along a 362-kilometer stretch connecting key destinations from Bilaspur to Dadhapara, Bilha, Gatoura, Jayram Nagar, Uslapur, Ghutku, Champa to Korba, and Nagpur to Bhilai.

This cutting-edge technology enables the simultaneous operation of multiple trains within a single section, streamlining rail traffic and enhancing efficiency. However, the introduction of this advanced technology has led to occasional passenger confusion as multiple trains travelling in the same direction halt within these sections. This phenomenon, though unusual to passengers, is an inherent feature of the automatic signaling operational system, SECR authorities said.

The automatic block signaling system has been effectively incorporated into various rail segments, covering distances such as 279 kilometers between Nagpur and Bhilai, 14 kilometers between Bilaspur and Jayram Nagar, 16 kilometers between Bilaspur and Bilha, 16 kilometers between Bilaspur and Ghutku, and 37 kilometers from Champa to Korba.

This system strategically places signals at predetermined intervals between two stations. Under this revamped arrangement, signals are positioned roughly one and a half kilometers beyond the advanced starter signal in the station yard. This innovation enables trains to maintain a safe following distance, guided by signals. If any technical anomaly occurs in the signal system ahead, subsequent trains are promptly alerted. Consequently, trains halt precisely where they are located at the time.

The introduction of the automatic block signaling system marks a paradigm shift in train operations, they said. Trains can now operate in close proximity, often within a kilometer of each other on the same route. This transformation has not only accelerated train speeds but also bolstered rail traffic capacity. Furthermore, the need for trains to await departure clearance has been eliminated, as a green signal is granted as soon as a train exits the station yard.

This system boasts cost-effectiveness and heightens the safety of train operations. The integration of optical fiber cables has replaced conventional copper wiring, resulting in cost savings and reduced theft vulnerabilities. These robust cables are less prone to damage and provide real-time location tracking, thereby contributing to safer and more efficient rail operations.
