South Australia records five COVID-19 deaths and 2,816 new cases

SA Health COVID-19 vaccination clinics will be closed tomorrow for Anzac Day. (ABC News)

Five people have died in South Australia after testing positive to COVID-19.

SA Health said they were a man in his 70s, two men in their 80s, a man in his 90s and a woman in her 70s.

There are 256 people in hospital, which is an increase of 19 patients on yesterday's figure.

SA has reported 2,816 new cases – down from yesterday's 3,457 – but figures are usually lower on Sundays.

SA Health said genomic sampling had found 93 per cent of cases were the Omicron variant's BA.2 strain.

A new sub-variant of that strain called BA.2.12.1 is accounting for 20 per cent of cases in the United States.

University of South Australia epidemiologist Adrian Esterman said it could lead to case numbers rising here.

"We will see case number rise and I do think eventually the authorities will have to start introducing some of these public health requirements, so for me, I would have rather kept on the face mask rules, but eventually they will have to reintroduce it anyway," Professor Esterman said.
