South Australia records 4,856 new COVID-19 cases amid jump in testing

There have been another three COVID-linked deaths in South Australia, which on Wednesday reported 4,856 new cases of the virus — about 1,400 more than Tuesday.

The increase coincides with a jump in the number of people undergoing PCR testing.

Three women aged in their 50s, 80s and 90s have died with the virus.

There are 247 cases in hospital — seven fewer than yesterday — including 10 people in intensive care.

The total number of active cases has continued to drop and now sits at 26,486.

SA Health said the release of today's COVID-19 statistics was delayed by a technical glitch.

After the March state election, Premier Peter Malinauskas requested that SA Health release the numbers at midday on a daily basis.

The latest reported caseload is significantly more than the 3,463 cases reported on Tuesday, and is exactly 600 more than the 4,256 recorded on Wednesday last week.

But the jump comes after 11,184 people received PCR tests on Tuesday — a 57 per cent rise on the figure for Anzac Day.

There have been 393,647 COVID-19 cases reported in SA since the start of the pandemic.

Epidemiologist warns of rising case numbers as restrictions ease.
