A woman in her 80s has died in South Australia after testing positive for COVID-19, as the state records another drop in new cases.

SA recorded 4,096 new COVID-19 cases today, a drop of about 400 compared to yesterday.

South Australia recorded more than 5,000 cases a day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but that figure dropped to 4,483 yesterday.

Authorities expect cases to peak within the coming days before starting to decline in a week's time.

There are now 188 people in hospital with the virus, the highest number in five weeks.

Eight people are in intensive care.

The state now has 34,640 active cases — the highest number of active cases since January 20.

SA has significantly relaxed COVID restrictions in recent weeks and while mask mandates remain in place, Premier Peter Malinauskas has previously said he expects those rules to be relaxed on April 14.
