South Alabama coach Kane Wommack has officially announced his resignation, indicating that he is on the verge of becoming the defensive coordinator for new Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer. The two professionals have a history of working together, having served as assistants at Indiana under Tom Allen in 2019. DeBoer held the position of offensive coordinator while Wommack was the defensive coordinator at the time.

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Alabama is currently finalizing the deal with Wommack. However, specific contract details are still being ironed out, and the hiring is subject to university approval. While the official announcement is yet to be made, it seems highly likely that Wommack will join DeBoer's coaching staff in Alabama.

Wommack, who is only 36 years old, has spent the past three seasons as the head coach of South Alabama. Throughout his tenure, he has achieved a respectable 22-16 overall record, with a conference record of 13-11 in the Sun Belt. His departure from South Alabama marks the end of an era, and the university's Athletic Director Joel Erdmann expressed his gratitude for Wommack's contributions, acknowledging the progress the program made under his leadership. Erdmann wished Wommack and his wife Melissa the very best in their future endeavors.

Notably, South Alabama's defense, under Wommack's guidance, showcased its prowess this past season. They ranked 22nd in the country in yards per play allowed, on par with the defensive performance of Alabama, a program known for its defensive excellence. This accomplishment speaks volumes to Wommack's coaching abilities and his potential impact as the new defensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide.

On the other side of the ball, DeBoer is expected to bring several members of his offensive staff from Washington to Alabama, including play-caller Ryan Grubb. This move suggests that DeBoer is keen on maintaining continuity and implementing his offensive strategies effectively in his new role.

As the coaching staff at Alabama undergoes a transformation with DeBoer taking the helm, the addition of Wommack as the defensive coordinator will likely bolster the team's defensive capabilities. The combination of DeBoer's offensive expertise and Wommack's defensive acumen has the potential to create a formidable team that will aim to continue Alabama's winning tradition in college football.

Overall, Wommack's resignation from South Alabama is a significant development in the college football coaching landscape. Should the deal with Alabama be finalized as expected, Wommack will take on a prominent role as the defensive coordinator, bringing his experience and skill set to assist DeBoer in achieving success at the highest level of college football.
