South African superstar Evan Roos has drawn fire after a yellow card he received during the Stormers' 34-18 victory over Edinburgh this weekend.
In the 51st minute of the match, Roos engaged in a bit of grappling near a ruck with opposite number Nick Haining. It ended with Roos falling on top of Haining with his arm bent across his opponent's head/neck area.
Assessing the incident, referee Frank Murphy said: "What I'm seeing there is the two No.8s are wrestling at the ruck. Orange No.8 is bringing Blue No.8 to ground but then Blue No.8 uses unnecessary force and continues with the elbow, dangerously, onto the neck of the orange player.
"I'm on a yellow card because I don't see it as a strike but I do see it as a dangerous action."
The Scotland international had to leave the field for a head injury assessment and many believed that Roos was lucky with only having 10 minutes on the naughty step.
BBC broadcaster Gareth Rhys Owen tweeted: "Evan Roos with the oldest of old-school cheap shots that would have resulted in an on-floor scuffle 20 years ago and should have resulted in a red today."
Fans reacting to the incident on social media branded the decision 'disgraceful', 'a joke' and 'a red card any day of the week'.
The incident will now be scrutinised by the disciplinary process and could yet result in Roos receiving a ban if it is deemed that it was worthy of a red card.
