The latest Epic free game is Mortal Shell, the Souls-like action RPG from Cold Symmetry and Playstack that blends grueling combat with extensive customization in a dark fantasy world. You can get Mortal Shell for free on the Epic Games Store until 10: 59 a.m. Eastern Time on Dec. 29, 2022, after which point it will revert to its usual price of $29.99.
In Mortal Shell, you, a spirit, can take possession of the hollow shells of departed warriors, bringing them back to life and facing down deadly foes in battles that require careful thought and risk-taking. Rushing into every fight and haphazardly waving your weapon around will only invite failure.
Like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, Mortal Shell tells its story in an unorthodox fashion. Instead of your usual moments of exposition where the plot unfolds, you’ll piece together the story of a shattered world and the divine forces who inspire feverish, deranged devotion in your foes.
If you’re after an even less traditional RPG experience, you can get Mortal Shell’s Virtuous Cycle DLC for $4.99. Virtuous Cycle adds an extra roguelike campaign, where every death is the door to a fresh beginning, along with a new Shell and weapon and a massive customization tree to help you overcome the toughest foes.
