Sorn named No.2 in Asia's top 50 restaurants

Asia's 50 Best awards ceremony.

Nine of Bangkok's restaurants have made it onto the 2022 Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list.

Sorn, a southern Thai cuisine fine-dining restaurant in Bangkok, is placed at No.2 in the regional ranking, following Den, a hyper-kaiseki restaurant in Tokyo, Japan, which secured the No.1 spot.

The list, sponsored by S Pellegrino and Aqua Panna, names the top 50 dining establishments in China, Japan, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Japan leads in 2022 with 11 entries.

Sorn is on Sukhumvit 26 and helmed by chef Supaksorn "Ice" Jongsiri. Inspired by his grandmother's cooking, the restaurant's chef-patron transforms long-cherished Thai flavours into a one-of-a-kind gastronomic experience mimicking an in-depth expedition through the lush abundance of southern Thailand.

Every dish served at Sorn is highly temperature sensitive. It's something chef Ice pays special attention to, and his kitchen brigade delivers every dish at an incredible tempo. By controlling the temperature of his dishes, Ice is able to create a gustatory sequence that cleverly adds an unthought-of dimension to the deep-rooted cookery.

Also making it to the Top 10 from the Land of Smiles are Le Du, a modern Thai-inspired eatery, at No.4; Sühring, a German haute cuisine restaurant, at No.7; and Nusara, a 10-seat refined Thai restaurant, at No.10.

Blue by Alain Ducasse at Iconsiam ranked at No.25; Sushi Masato at No.29; Samrub Samrub Thai at No.31; Gaa at No.33; and Raan Jay Fai at No.46. All except Gaa are new entries.

Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list was first launched in 2013 to discover the continent's culinary talents while celebrating the glorious diversity of Asia's gastronomic scene.

The selection is compiled by an academy of 300 international experts and independent authorities in the world of gastronomy. They range from renowned chefs and restaurateurs to food journalists and travelling gastronomes based in the region.
