Sophia Bush uses these natural cabinets to ensure her kitchen doesn't feel clinical and cold, experts say

Sophia Bush.

Kitchens can be cold spaces. While marble and metal are frequently used materials and can achieve a sleek style, they can sometimes feel slightly clinical. The solution? Natural materials go a long way for those looking to create a warm and cozy space.

We're taking cues from actor and activist Sophia Bush – the One Tree Hill star posted a video in her home, and the wood cabinetry and countertops are serving as major inspiration for a natural kitchen.

Though wood kitchens can evoke images of retro or rustic spaces, wood is one of the most timeless and versatile materials that can be used in a variety of designs. And experts agree.

'Wood is sturdy, reliable, and inviting,' explains Homes & Gardens' Editor Jennifer Ebert. 'It's a staple in any modern rustic dining space, and there are endless options in its tone and texture, from oak to walnut,' she says.

Sophia Bush's cabinets provide visual interest with a wood frame and frosted glass window – a design move that blends modern and rustic elements to allow for further details from each aesthetic in the kitchen.

'To enhance the look of these cabinets, try accessorizing with wood utensils and simple glassware,' Jen suggests. 'They ensure spaces don't ever feel cold or clinical, even when using metal features, like Sophia's.

There are also environmental advantages to utilizing wood in the space, namely, reclaimed wood, which is as good for the planet as it is unique in its design (and is, unsurprisingly, one of the top ways experts use wood in the kitchen).

'Reclaimed wood is incredibly chic and durable,' Jen says. 'It adds a historic touch to a kitchen, while any stains that may appear on the wood only add to their worn-in appearance,' she says.

Prefer a clean and modern space, but looking to implement a subtle touch of nature-inspired design? Raw wood is the answer, creating a bespoke yet friendly appearance in practically any kitchen.

'The graininess of raw wood, particularly as a countertop or cabinet, pairs perfectly with clean, white tiling, or even the ever-popular green kitchen,' Jen explains.
