'Sooner rather than later' - Former Liverpool star gives Aurelien Tchouameni transfer verdict

Steve McManaman has told his former club Liverpool why they should be looking to sign a player ‘like’ Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Reds have been frequently linked with a move for the Monaco midfielder, who is becoming increasingly likely to leave the French club this summer. Real Madrid have also been credited with an interest in the player.

However, club sources insist the Reds have been informed by the 22-year old’s representatives that he is joining the La Liga champions later this summer.

COMMENT: Manchester United have just shown how far they’ve fallen with Liverpool taunts

Tchouameni is currently represented by French agency Excellence Sports Nation and it is understood that ESN have informed Liverpool 's recruitment team that their client wants to sign for the 13-time European Cup winners later this year.

While McManaman admits he does not know if a move to Liverpool is possible for Tchouameni, he acknowledges that a player of his ilk is one that Jurgen Klopp would benefit from having in his squad.

“I do believe Liverpool will be looking to make a move for a player in that area, but whether they fancy Aurelien Tchouameni now is another thing,” McManaman told Horseracing.net .

“Maybe they have their eyes set on somebody else further down the line. However, Tchouameni is a young midfielder and they should be looking at players like him, but £60 million is a lot of money.

“Liverpool will be looking at that area sooner rather than later considering the age of Jordan Henderson and James Milner and they will be looking to get rid of some of the fringe players and bring in players who can immediately challenge for a starting berth.

“Liverpool do have an abundance of midfielders and considering the success they’ve had this season, it highlights that the squad may only need a little bit of tinkering in the summer but whether Tchouameni is a player to come in is something I don’t know.”
