Sons of Anarchy sequel series is now in the works about Jax Teller's son

A sequel series could be on the way for beloved crime series Sons of Anarchy.

The cult show aired from 2008 to 2014 and focused on biker and crime boss Jax Teller, played by British heartthrob Charlie Hunnam, who becomes the leader of an outlaw motorcycle club.

Sons of Anarchy ran for seven seasons before its epic finale, but now its creator has confirmed that a sequel run will be on the way.

Creator Kurt Sutter has been engaging with fans on social media in the time of lockdown and has confirmed his plans for the future of the franchise.

The show already has a current spin-off, Mayans M.C., which follows a biker gang and former rivals of the Sons, which has aired since 2018.

On Facebook, Sutter was asked: "How, in your mind, will Abel's destiny play out?"

He then replied: "I had this revelation between SoA and [follow-up show] Mayans, that the SoA mythology would be four shows. Sons of Anarchy, Mayans M.C., First Nine and Sam Crow.

"First Nine would be a limited series. Nine episodes. It would end before we began to tread on history we created in Son.

"Sam Crow would be the fate of Wendi, Nero, Abel and Thomas."

So, essentially, we will likely be getting a prequel mini-series about the Sons before Jax's reign, perhaps with a young Gemma Teller ( Katey Sagal )?

However, it sounds like the likelihood of Sam Crow or First Nine airing soon isn't high, especially due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He added: "I can't discuss my current situation with Fox, so right now I can't comment on the reality of any of this happening."

Considering how much the show has been seen on Netflix, could the streaming giant help out?

Regardless, fans were sent into hype by the news and took to social media to share their desire for a spin-off or sequel show.

One wrote on Twitter : "I always figured Abel getting the SOA ring from Gemma left the door open for a spinoff down the road. I'd watch it!"

Another thankful fan tweeted: "Even if with fox it never happens im grateful af you WANTED to give your fans all the answers."

Elsewhere, another replied to Sutter: "you're a genius i hope you get to do all those shows we love your work ty for entertaining us with your genius."

A different follower commented: "It would be so cool in the future if things were sorted with Fox and Sam Crow was created.

"I love SoA and didn't want it to end even though it had to. Would love to know what happened after."

Finally, one Sons of Anarchy fan concluded: "How I miss SOA. Even if you did get to make a sequal about Abel, that character has to try and compete with the legand that Charlie Hunnam created. No easy task but would be key to that show working."

We couldn't agree more! Here's hoping it eventually makes its way to screens near us.

Sons of Anarchy seasons 1 to 7 are available on Netflix.
