Sonos Ace hits the market as the very first set of headphones from the speaker brand

Sonos made a name for itself in smart audio tech for your home, featuring products that allow you to listen to music around your home.

It’s best known for sleek, compact home audio systems with clever features like turning off when people leave the room and voice activation.

Now, the company is making its first foray into mobile audio with Sonos Ace, its very first pair of headphones.

The over-ear Bluetooth headphones come complete with support for Snapdragon Sound and aptX Lossless, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, active noise cancellation, USB-C lossless audio, and the ability to connect with your at-home Sonos products.

That means you can watch your TV using the headphones and sync up with your Sonos soundbar.

Sonos Ace boasts impressive noise-cancelling capabilities as the main USP, along with a sleek look that matches the style of the at-home speakers.

Available from June 5, the headphones will start from £449, putting them in the realm of premium headphones.

Early reviews from the likes of Tech Radar and The Verge compliment the comfort (despite a relatively heavy weight of 312g) and impressive audio quality of the headphones.

You won’t need the Sonos app, used to control speakers and lighting around the home for existing Sonos users, in order to use the headphones, making them accessible for first-time Sonos customers.

Sonos has openly said that it welcomes feedback from users at this early stage of its foray into headphones.

It already has plans for future iterations of the Sonos Ace. For example, as a 'TrueCinema' mode is coming down the line, where the headphones will tweak the spatial audio in TV mode to sound more like a home theatre system.

That would make cinematic audio more convincing to the brain, rather than sounding like it's from a generic giant room.

However, that feature won't be available at launch – but it does show that Sonos Ace will likely not be a one-off, but instead represent a wider shift into the headphones market.
