Sonic the hedgehog turns 32: Where to watch the Sega showcase today

This Friday marks 32 years since Sonic made his Western debut on the Sega Mega Drive.

Sega is commemorating the day with a unique Sonic Central presentation of news and items.

Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team, had hinted that 2023 would be a big year for Sonic, but other than the launch of Sonic Superstars, little else has been said about the studio's near-term ambitions for the franchise.

Here’s how you can watch the Sega showcase today and what to expect.

Where to watch the Sega showcase today

Sonic Central will be broadcast on YouTube and Twitch today at 4pm.

Sega did not provide any specific details regarding the broadcast’s actual content beyond its customary promise of a “sneak peek” at some upcoming Sonic ventures.

Fans can anticipate further information on the newly announced side-scrolling platformer Sonic Superstars.

The trailer was released two days ago at the Nintendo Direct presentation and it reiterated many of the game’s features and content. We already know players can enjoy the game by themselves or with up to three other players, and that players will have a variety of stages to play through with unique abilities.

There’s a chance we could get more information on the planned Sonic Frontiers’ DLC 2, which was said to make Tails, Amy, and Knuckles playable in the game.

These individuals may employ new Emerald abilities to move and fight in “dynamic new ways”.

Sonic lovers can also expect new Koco and Open Zone challenges and the Spin Dash ability to return in the second major update.

Ian Flynn also returns to write the concept for the new Sonic Frontiers DLC.

Outside the gaming world, there’s hope the presentation will cover updates on the Netflix Sonic Prime series.

Sega probably has one or two more things it has kept hidden, which will all be revealed tonight.
