Sonic The Hedgehog movie redesign: New animation revealed after fan backlash to 'terrifying' first trailer

A new trailer for the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog film has been revealed, featuring a revamped version of the character after huge fan backlash to the original design.

Back in April, a teaser clip for the 2020 film was posted online and received widespread derision, with many viewers aghast at the new look of the super-speed character.

The film’s director, Jeff Fowler, responded to the criticism and claimed the animation would be fully redesigned.

Fowler tweeted: “Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be…”

Now, the new and improved Sonic has returned in a fresh trailer. There are some big changes in the CGI-animated hedghog’s look — his figure is less peculiarly human-like, with much larger hands, and the upturned nose that many picked out for ridicule has been altered. His supposedly “human”-looking teeth, which some called “terrifying”, are still present, although rather less prominent than on the previous iteration.

In this new trailer, we see Sonic cause a nationwide power blackout after running too quickly around a baseball field. He finds friendship and protection in Tom Wachowski — played by James Marsden — but is pursued by Dr Ivo Robotnik, the madcap villain played by Jim Carrey.

The film is set to arrive in cinemas on February 14 next year.

Sonic The Hedgehog hasn’t been the only film this year to become an online laughing stock after releasing its first trailer. The new Cats movie, which will feature the likes of James Corden and Taylor Swift, was branded “a drug-induced nightmare made real”.
