When it comes to video-game adaptations, the Sonic franchise is goated. The team behind the films have had a great track record of listening to fans and that’s the reason why they’re accomplishing the feat of having a trilogy. So when Sonic The Hedgehog 2 teased Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic’s arch-rival, fans were keen to see how this beloved character would be adapted in his cinematic debut.
Well a second trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has hit the internet and we can’t even say ‘we are so back’ because we never left. The first trailer gave us a taste of Keanu Reeves voicing Sonic’s arch-rival Shadow, the Dark Rider motorcycle and the Maria backstory, but there was one question left on everyone’s mind: Does Shadow have a gun? The new trailer reveals…
Shadow has a gun.
And to say the internet is celebrating is an understatement.
What’s the big deal?
Shadow The Hedgehog’s origin go back to 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2, becoming a fan-favourite for his edgier and cooler design and personality. SEGA would later give him his own spin-off game in 2005, using the Shadow character as a vessel for an action-shooter but also to introduce a darker and mature side of the Sonic universe. During the game’s promotion at E3 (R.I.P), Shadow and his gun solidified itself as an iconic duo for the Sonic fandom.
However, in the nearly two decades since Shadow The Hedgehog blessed our PlayStations with a true gamer experience, the character’s darker side has been dialed back, with SEGA revoking his firearms license. Seeing Shadow in the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 trailer with a John Wick voice and nice glock was proof we were in for a faithful adaptation of the Shadow character.
And that’s what it’s all about when it comes to these video-game adaptations — honouring the source material that the fans hold dearly. Which is why fans are also keen to see Shadow’s creator, Dr. Gerald Robotnik (whoever decided to have Jim Carrey play Robotnik AND his own grandfather deserves a raise) also on the big screen, because it means fans are getting the full anime backstory for Shadow.
When will Sonic The Hedgehog 3 be released in Australia?
The film will be released theatrically on Boxing Day, 26 December, 2024.
And you best be going to the theatres because I guarantee you there’ll be audiences cheering when that moment happens (iyky).
