Sonia Gandhi admitted to hospital due to post-COVID issues

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been hospitalised because of COVID-related issues but is stable, the party said on Sunday.

“Congress president, Smt. Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital today owing to COVID-related issues. She is stable and will be kept at the hospital for observation. We thank all the Congress men & women as also all well-wishers for their concern and good wishes,” party’s communication chief Randeep Surjewala tweeted.

ED summons

Sources indicated that the Congress chief had visited the hospital for a post-COVID check-up.

Ms. Gandhi, 75, had tested positive for COVID-19 on June 2 and could not appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to record her statement in the National Herald case.

Following Ms. Gandhi’s request for more time, the agency asked her to appear on June 23.

Both Ms. Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi, have been summoned to record their statements under criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Mr. Gandhi is scheduled to appear before the agency on Monday.

Swamy complaint

The case to investigate alleged financial irregularities under the PMLA was registered about nine months ago after a trial court took cognisance of an Income Tax Department probe that was carried out on the basis of a private criminal complaint filed by former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy in 2013.

Young Indian paid ₹50 lakh to the Congress for transferring the ₹90-crore debt to it, the complaint said.
