Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was arrested on Monday evening local time on suspicion of rape. The arrest is particularly concerning as it marks his third run-in with the law since August.
Marius, 27, is being accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was “unconscious or for other reasons unable to resist the act”, per News.com.au. While details about the incident are still emerging, it has been reported this arrest is part of an ongoing investigation on the prince. Police haven’t specified when the alleged rape happened.
In August, Marius was arrested for allegedly attacking his former girlfriend, leading to charges of bodily harm and damaging her apartment. Police discovered a knife lodged in one of the bedroom walls during their investigation. Just a month later, he was detained again for violating a restraining order related to that same case.
Marius denies the allegations and is cooperating with police, his lawyer said.
Hege Salomon, the lawyer for the woman at the centre of the case, told a local broadcaster that “she is having a hard time”. She has not been identified.
Marius was raised alongside his half-siblings, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, but he doesn’t have any official royal role.
As for what happens next, police are still deciding whether Marius will be held in custody. The royal palace has kept quiet on the matter for now, but with investigations ongoing, we can expect more updates in the days to come.
