The son of a renowned "lotto gran" who tried to claim more than £15 million by saying she'd accidentally washed the winning ticket turned to crime following his mum's death, a court heard.
Brandon Scott has been banned from a string of shops to "give them a break" as his life had spiralled into drug-taking and criminal behaviour after finding Susanne Hinte's body in August 2019.
The notoriety of his mum’s attempt to claim half of a £33million jackpot by saying the ticket had been destroyed in the washing machine had contributed to Scott’s slide into addiction and crime, his barrister said.
The 24-year-old admitted 11 thefts, including stealing a schoolboy's bike, and was slapped with a criminal behaviour order by the court on Friday (June 25) bannning him from a shops in Malvern and the surrounding area .
Worcester Magistrates Court heard Scott had been a "mummy's boy" and was left heartbroken by his mum's death.
He sobbed as his barrister explained how his mother claimed half the £33million lotto jackpot prize saying she had put the winning ticket in the washing machine.
Judith Kenny, defending, said: "Brandon Scott was close to his mother, he would say he was a 'mummy's boy'.
"He found her struggling and she died.
"He had to deal with, prior to that, her notoriety as the 'lotto gran' with the washed lottery ticket.
"He struggled with that too.
"Not long after that he lost the home, and a child. He became addicted to class A drugs - an opportunity to bury his problems.
"Once it got hold of him he became involved in criminal activity."
Scott, of Powick, Worcs., was banned from entering or loitering outside a number of shops including Londis, Wilko, Iceland, Waitrose, Matalan, Co-op, Tesco Express and Bradfords Building Supplies. He is also banned from B&M in Worcester and a Co-op in Pershore. The order also states he must not loiter outside shops with his ex-partner Natalie Cull.
Sarah Hurd, prosecuting, said: "It gives them [the shops] all a break. He can do that and accepts he will."
The court heard he stole £208 worth of pizzas, steaks, cheeses, ice lollies, clothing, cleaning products and washing up liquid between September 2021 and this January.
Scott also stole toys, advent calendars, LED lights, candles and electric toothbrushes from a Wilko shop in Malvern.
In May Scott was made subject of another 12-month community order requiring him to complete 20 rehabilitation activity days.
He was also given a 16-week curfew, told to pay £300 compensation to the victim, £262 owed to the shops and £95 in victim surcharge.
Susanne was given the "lotto gran" moniker in January 2016 after sending a lottery ticket to Camelot questioning whether she'd won half of the National Lottery jackpot.
She made a failed bid for the mega pay-out saying she had put the winning ticket through the wash with a pair of jeans.
Camelot were unable to verify the numbers and the real winner, who chose to stay anonymous, came forward.
She died in August 2017, aged 49, following a suspected heart attack at her home in Borrowdale Drive, Worcester.
Paramedics and police were called to her semi-detached home after being found unresponsive by Brandon, who was aged 18 at the time.
