Son of former Ireland midfielder hails dad after debut goal

Calum Kavanagh says dad Graham has helped him cope with the ups and downs of life in professional football.

The 19-year-old son of former Ireland midfielder has made an impressive start to his loan spell at Newport County.

He marked his debut last weekend with the all-important second goal in a 2-1 win against Swindon Town.

Middlesbrough prospect Calum has been prolific as a striker in the Boro underage system - and is desperate to make it in the senior game, just like his dad, a 16-time capped star.

“It's brilliant because he has taught me a lot about the game,” he said.

“Football is not always nice and we have the harsh conversations then he will tell me when I've done well.

“It's good because he has been through these experiences and knows what type of ups and downs you go through.

“He's quite familiar around here and loved his time at Cardiff - if I could do half of what he did there then I'd be delighted.”

Kavanagh scored once in 12 appearances last season on-loan at Harrogate Town - and it took him just eight minutes to equal that tally during his stint at Newport.

“I was on loan at Harrogate last year and for whatever reason for the first few games I didn’t get going,” said the forward.

“I have come here hungry, wanting to make an impact straight away. Luckily enough I've managed to do that.

“I feel that my threats are going in behind with my pace and my movement, whether that creates chances for me or others.”
