When Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was elected president in the Philippines he pledged to legalise divorce. Two years later the legislation still has not passed but a bill has been tabled. It means there could be changes in the law by the end of next year. The Philippines along with the Vatican are the only states where divorce is illegal. Legalising the practice is bound to send shockwaves in the deeply conservative country where the Catholic church’s influence remains predominant.
