I 'jumped out of my skin' when government alert sounded at 3am

People across the country claim to have been rudely awakened by the UK's emergency alert siren in the early hours of the morning.

The government tested the new national emergency alert system on Sunday afternoon, with a siren sounding on millions of phones at 3pm. The loud blared from all devices using 4G and 5G networks in the UK.

The alert rang for 10 seconds and displayed a message notifying phone users that no action was needed in response to the test. However just after the test, reports poured in that the alerts were either early, late, or did not arrive at all.

But today, Monday April 24, some people reported being awoken in the early hours by alerts that had been delayed, or receiving a second test at an odd time.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Anyone else in the UK get a second #emergencyalert this morning just before 9am?" as another added: "Anyone else in UK receive yet another emergency alert test today?! Not great when driving!"

Taking to social media platform NextDoor, one confused Merseyside resident said they were woken at 3am to the sound of the ringing alert. Commenting, a second said they were surprised to receive theirs at 7.30am. Someone else received theirs shortly before 9am as they said it was "crazy".

ECHO reader Christine Finnegan wrote: "My son got his at 3 this morning jumped out of my skin when it went off absolutely ridiculous."

The emergency alert system is designed to warn the public if there is a danger to life nearby. Once established, the system is intended to be used in life-threatening situations including flooding and wildfires.

The government previously confirmed that a review will be conducted to find out why a some users did not receive the test. A UK Government spokesman said: "We have effectively completed the test of the UK-wide Emergency Alerts system, the biggest public communications exercise of its kind ever done.

"We are working with mobile network operators to review the outcome and any lessons learned."
