Son Heung-min makes bold 'world-class' claim as Antonio Conte praises Tottenham star

What a 2021/22 season Son Heung-min had. The South Korean has been a key part of the Tottenham squad for some time now and seems to be going from strength to strength.

Not only did the last campaign seem to strengthen his relationship with Harry Kane, with the duo breaking the Premier League record for the most combination goals, Son also had his own achievements to be proud of. The 29-year-old scored 23 goals and registered nine assists in his 35 Premier League appearances, sharing the Golden Boot award with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

It is now time to look to the upcoming season and many of Antonio Conte's squad returned to Hotspur Way on Monday, to prepare for the pre-season matches ahead. With Spurs jetting off to South Korea at the weekend, Son will link-up with his players in his home country.

Not long after Son had picked up the Golden Boot award, some comments his father made went viral. South Korean journalist Sungmo Lee gave some explanation on the comments from Son Woong-jung and they were not too dissimilar to what the Tottenham man's father had said in 2018.

"He must work harder and make more progress. If he is satisfied with what he has achieved now, crisis is on the way. He must always try to do better to stay in the best form, don't you think?" the 29-year-old's father said, clearly wanting his son to progress even further.

"Instead of being happy to stay where he is, I always want him to be 10% better...he must be able to play a solid role in one of the world's top clubs. That's when he will become a world class player. He scored a lot of goals this year, but it doesn't mean he will do the same next year."

The comments were taken out of context by some, whereas it seems that Son's father just wants to see him become the best player he can and the Spurs attacker recently responded to hat had been said. "It's my father's opinion...and I agree with him," the South Korean admitted.

"I have been trying to be 'world class', and a true 'world class' player wouldn't have these debates, which means I still have space to [continue developing]." These comments are likely to be pleasing for Conte to hear, knowing that one of his top players can still see room for improvement.

The Italian and Son clearly have a good relationship at Tottenham, seen both on and off the pitch. This was reiterated with the 52-year-old's recent comments on the South Korean.

"For every manager, if you want to win, you need players of great talent. Sonny impressed me for the commitment, for the attitude, for the behaviour – he is a really good guy," he explained, in Tottenham's original documentary, Antonio Conte: 202 days.

"But I think many people don’t know the man, the person that you find in Sonny. He always has a smile on his face. For sure he is a positive person. He is an important player for Tottenham. Every manager dreams of having this type of talent in your hands."

Not only does the 29-year-old clearly have a good relationship with his boss, he also seems to have strong bonds with his teammates. The South Korean is always seen with a smile on his face and joking around with his fellow Spurs players, during training.

Son is likely to work even harder next season, with the busy fixture schedule Tottenham have and new arrivals who will be fighting for regular game time. However if the 29-year-old takes his form from last season into the next campaign and continues developing, who knows how good he could be.
