Son Heung-min claim made after Tottenham star's hat-trick in emphatic win against Aston Villa

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has hailed the impressive form of Son Heung-min after the Spurs winger scored a hat-trick during their 4-0 win at Aston Villa on Saturday. The victory put Antonio Conte's side in pole position for a top four finish after Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton earlier in the day.

Son has been ruthless in front of goal of late, with six goals in his last three games and is now the Premier League's second highest scorer behind Mohamed Salah. The South Korean already enjoyed a prolific partnership with Harry Kane and January signing Dejan Kulusevski, who was also on the score sheet at Villa Park and has added another dimension to their attack.

Villa dominated large spells of the first half but were unable to find an equaliser after Son gave the Lilywhites the lead in the third minute, and they were punished for their wasteful finishing after the break. Sherwood paid tribute to Spurs’ relentless front three and suggested that with Son in such good form they don’t have to be at their best to win games.

“It’s almost telepathic [the understanding between Kane and Son]. Sherwood told Premier League productions. “And then this boy has joined in as well, Kulusevski, he’s getting in support, he’s always got a good touch, seems to pick the right pass at the right time. When you have got clinical finishers like Son in your side you don’t have to play well to win football matches.”

Son has scored 18 goals in all competitions for Spurs this season and Conte's side have been the highest scorers in the league in 2022, finding the back of the net on 31 occasions. With the race for fourth spot entering the final stages, Spurs will need to maintain their scintillating form to beat north London rivals Arsenal to fourth spot.
