Son Heung-min celebrates as Tottenham offer injury update after sickening collision

Heung-min Son celebrated Tottenham's Champions League progression with his teammates after being forced off with a head injury.

The South Korean's evening was cut short in the first-half after he clashed in the air with Marseille's Chancel Mbemba, which left him dazed as he needed help walking off the pitch following a lengthy stoppage at the Stade Velodrome. Head injuries are being treated with increased caution and Son was immediately withdrawn.

Protocols surrounding such injuries mean the Tottenham star could yet miss the game with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. In the meantime though Son was able to rejoice in his side's late win which guaranteed them a spot in the last 16 as they topped their group with photos posted of the team celebrating in the dressing room on social media.

Antonio Conte's assistant, Cristian Stellini, took charge of proceedings with the former Chelsea boss resigned to a spot in the stands after his red card last week. He was unable to provide a diagnosis for Son as the club look to determine whether or not his injury was concussion-related.]

He said: "We have to check on him tomorrow but Son felt better in the dressing room after the game and he was able to celebrate. We're not sure if it is concussion yet. It was an injury to his face, his eye is swollen."

Tottenham will be hoping Son is available for their game in a matter of days as they deal with injuries to key individuals in their forward line. Richarlison is already a notable absentee whilst Dejan Kulusevski is also sidelined, which is testing Conte's resources ahead of the World Cup break.

Son has scored five times for the north Londoners this term amid criticism of Tottenham's style, which some believe is hampering the team's attacking players. Conte has employed a pragmatic approach which has seen his side fall behind in games before having to force the issue.

Stellini had to mastermind a second-half comeback in Marseille as Tottenham, again, conceded the opening goal with the assistant bemoaning such a trend. He said: "The performance, we have to analyse. We repeat the same routine of the last three or four games - not starting well in the first half. We didn't use our intensity in the first half. We let them play too much in our half and we lost the pitch. They had control of the game. In the second half when we changed to 3-5-2 we had more control of the game. We played a good second half."

Tottenham topped their group meaning they will avoid the likes of Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern Munich in the last 16 with the draw due to be made.
