Son ends Tottenham drought with hat-trick off the bench in Leicester win - 6 talking points

Heung-Min Son came off the bench to score a stunning hat-trick and ensure that Tottenham kept the pressure on Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Leicester had gone ahead through Youri Tielemans' penalty, though Harry Kane quickly equalised. Eric Dier then turned the game on its head by flicking in Ivan Perisic's squad but Leicester had the last laugh of the first-half when James Maddison scored a remarkable volley to level.

A series of attacking substitutions, coupled with a defensive horror-show from Leicester, meant that Spurs claimed the three points, with Rodrigo Bentancur first slotting past Danny Ward before Heung-Min Son scored three stunning goals to seal the win. Here, Mirror Football looks at six talking points from the entertaining clash.

Poignant tributes to the Queen

As directed by the Premier League, Tottenham and Leicester delivered a series of poignant tributes to the late Queen Elizabeth II. This was the first game held in London since her death, with all at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium impeccably observing the minute's silence ahead of the game.

Later, the crowd rose again for a minute's applause on the 70th minute. Both managers also wore black suits, while Spurs captain Harry Kane delivered his own tribute in his programme notes.

“No matter what job you’re in, she showed that consistency and held an impeccable reputation, so she was a truly great role model for all of us and that’s why we’re so proud that she our Queen. We’ll celebrate what’s been an amazing life," he wrote.

Son call pays off

Heung-Min Son was surprisingly dropped for the visit of the Foxes, with Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski and Harry Kane selected in attack for Spurs. The South Korean had failed to scored from any of his 18 shots entering the clash with the Foxes, with Antonio Conte trying a fresh plan of attack.

It was a call that paid off, with Richarlison playing a key part in winning the corner Dier scored from. Son did come on for the Brazilian just before the hour mark and notched a stunning goal to respond in the best possible fashion to his omission from the starting line-up.

He proceeded to add to that long-range effort with two more goals to finally end his drought in front of goal. It will likely be a long time before Conte drops him from the starting line-up again.

Problems mount for Leicester

After defeat at Spurs, Leicester remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, with the pressure on Brendan Rodgers increasing. Once again, their defending was the root cause of their downfall, with all three of Tottenham's goals preventable.

It was particularly at set-pieces where the Foxes were vulnerable, with both Harry Kane and Eric Dier escaping their markers to head past Danny Ward. But the worst example came in the second-half when Wilfried N'Didi dallied on the ball before gifting it to Spurs.

That allowed Rodgrio Bentancur to go through and goal and slot past Ward for what would ultimately be the winner. They were also unable to convert their chances, with Rodgers' side having picked up just one point in their opening seven games.

Kane continues remarkable record

It did not take long for Spurs to equalise following Tielemans' penalty and it was no surprise to see Kane wheeling away in celebration. He managed to escape the attention of Leicester right-back Timothy Castagne to head in Ben Davies' cross at the back post.

His goal means that the Spurs skipper continues a remarkable record against the Foxes. Kane has now scored 18 goals against Leicester, which is the second-best record against one club in Premier League history.

He needs just two more goals against the Foxes to draw level with Alan Shearer's current record of 20. While he was not able to find them on Saturday, he will be looking forward to the reverse fixture.

Defensive concerns for Conte

Any concerns Antonio Conte may have over his defence reared their head on Saturday evening. It did not take long for the hosts to be exposed, with Davison Sanchez rushing in to make an ill-timed challenge on James Justin that resulted in a penalty.

Their defending was also poor when Maddison scored his side's equaliser towards the end of the first-half, with Ryan Sessegnon being beaten too easily in the air by Castagne from a long ball forward.

In fact, Leicester had several more chances to score, with the hosts frequently being opened up. The fact his side looked so nervous against a team that has struggled so badly this season will certainly be a concern for Conte.

Maddison proves Southgate wrong

One of the biggest calls that England boss Gareth Southgate made when picking his next Three Lions squad was to again leave out James Maddison. The attacking midfield has not featured for the Three Lions since November 2019.

His hopes of making the squad for this winter's World Cup would appear to be all but over following this latest omission. But the Leicester star made an effort to prove Southgate wrong as he inspired his side to a draw at Spurs.

Maddison was undoubtedly Leicester's man of the match as he drove his side forward. And he capped his performance with a wonderful goal, sweeping Castagne's cross over Hugo Lloris on the volley.
