No one doubts that USC quarterback Caleb Williams will go No. 1 overall in next month’s NFL draft to the Chicago Bears. The real intrigue begins at No. 2 with the Washington Commanders.
At the NFL’s Annual League Meeting, new Patriots coach Jared Mayo acknowledged the mystery surrounding the Commanders at No. 2 overall.

Like Washington and Chicago, the Patriots need a quarterback, so they’re very interested in what happens in front of them. Which quarterback does New England like better? Is it Drake Maye (North Carolina) or Jayden Daniels (LSU)?
It’s widely assumed that the Commanders will pick either Maye or Daniels at No. 2, with the Patriots taking the one Chicago and Washington pass on.
Could Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy also be in the mix?
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, in his conversations with other NFL executives who know Washington general manager Adam Peters, they believe McCarthy could be his pick.

That’s one perspective. On the same set, Mike Garofolo said other teams think Washington is locking in on Daniels.
Here’s the thing: None of them know, and that’s exactly how Peters wants things to be over the next month. So, we’ve heard rumors of Maye, Daniels, and now McCarthy heading to Washington. When will we hear Michael Penix Jr. (Washington) and Bo Nix (Oregon) as possibilities?
