MULTIPLE events for Hogmanay in Edinburgh have been cancelled, but a few still remain scheduled.
Organisers along with Edinburgh City Council and Police Scotland confirmed on Monday that a host of events in Edinburgh to celebrate Hogmanay have been cancelled including fireworks at the castle and the street party.
The “difficult decision” to cancel all outdoor events on December 30 and 31 was made by organisers because of safety concerns due to the severe weather forecast.
However, not all events have been called off with a number still planned to go ahead. Monday evening’s performance of Swamplesque at Assembly Hall is still to go ahead along with Idlewild’s concert at the Assembly Rooms.
On Tuesday the Bairns New Year Revels and New Year Revels at the Assembly Rooms are still scheduled to go ahead, along with the Candlelit Concert at St. Giles' Cathedral.
An Edinburgh’s Hogmanay spokesperson said: “We also continue to look forward to the packed First Footin' and Sprogmanay programme of events on New Year’s Day – a series of free and ticketed indoor music gigs across the city centre, Leith and Portobello.”
Events cancelled over the next two days include the Night Afore Disco Party in West Princes Street Gardens on Monday evening, the Hogmanay Street Party, Concert in the Gardens, and the Midnight Fireworks from Edinburgh Castle, on Tuesday.
The news of the events being cancelled follows a series of weather warnings that have been issued across Scotland.
A yellow warning for wind across the central belt and other parts of Scotland is in place from Monday until 11pm on Hogmanay, while snow and rain warnings will remain in place from Monday until the bells.
On Sunday Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Torchlight Procession was also cancelled at the last minute after organisers said strong winds posed a risk to safety.
