Liz Truss and her Cabinet held a moment of silence this morning as they gathered to mark the passing of the Queen.
The new Prime Minister and her senior ministers were all smiles when they met for the first time on Wednesday after Ms Truss took over from Boris Johnson in No10.
Today their meeting was markedly different.
Black-clad ministers were pictured arriving in Downing Street this morning with grim expressions, as they gathered for an extraordinary Cabinet meeting.
Ms Truss and her team met in No10 to pay tribute to the late monarch and to share memories of her lifetime of service, including their own recollections of encounters with her.
The top ministers were united in support for the King as the nation mourns the passing of its longest-serving monarch.
There was a moment of silence at the end of the meeting.
MPs and peers are paying tribute to the Queen today and tomorrow, in a rare Saturday sitting of Parliament.
A minute's silence was observed at the start of the session, with MPs packing out the Commons chamber as they waited to pay their respects.
Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle will determine the timetable in the House for the following days, but it is expected to be significantly reduced until after the state funeral.
Meanwhile, the PM was due to hold an audience with the new King this afternoon at Buckingham Palace.
Ms Truss spoke to King Charles last night after delivering a sombre tribute to the Queen outside Downing Street.
In a speech, just a few days into her role, Ms Truss heralded the late monarch's "great legacy" and said the second Elizabethan Era had come to an end.
"Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which modern Britain was built. Our country has grown and flourished under her reign," she said.
"Britain is the great country it is today because of her."
Ms Truss is expected to deliver a reading at a service of remembrance at St Paul's Cathedral.
Labour's Shadow Cabinet also met to pay tribute to the Queen.
A Labour spokesman said: "The shadow cabinet met at 9.30 this morning in Richmond House on the parliamentary estate.
" Keir Starmer led tributes to HM Queen Elizabeth II and the whole shadow cabinet stood in silent tribute to the late Queen."
