New York City will only experience a partial offering of the upcoming solar eclipse, but its residents are nonetheless expecting to make the most of this astronomical event with watch parties and special offerings all across the Big Apple.
The total solar eclipse, which will be visible from over a dozen states, will cross into New York State on Monday afternoon. However, Manhattan isn't located on the path of totality, where individuals will experience complete blockage of the sun.
Instead, the city will see a partial eclipse, with 90% of the sun covered by the moon at its peak,
The event will take place at 3:25 p.m., local time, according to NASA's eclipse explorer. The last eclipse seen from NYC took place s in 2017, and the moon covered much less surface —about 65% of the sun in New York City.
The nearest location to watch the moon covering 100% of the sun will be Syracuse, just 200 miles from New York City. However, restaurants, hotels, parks, and public institutions in the city are preparing unique experiences for viewing the partial eclipse.
The astronomical spectacle is predicted to last over four minutes, but there will be much more than just eclipse glasses available at different events seeking to make the most of the experience. Here are some of the best places in New York City to watch the 2024 solar eclipse. Eclipse glasses are necessary to avoid eye injuries.
