Soho House’s Stockholm opening is in a magnificent 1800s church

Last year Soho House stated its mission to have 86 clubs across the globe by the end of 2027, alongside a longlist of buzzy new launches to add to its 36-strong portfolio. On the top of that list was Stockholm, which is now officially the first opening of 2023.

The well-loved chain has long perfected its signature brand of “eclectic cosy”, think: art-deco furnishings, barely-there sepia-toned lighting and soft velvet cushions scattered everywhere. But for this opening they’re serving up something extra special.

Situated in a former Methodist church in Östermalm with high vaulted ceilings that date back to 1894 and epic stained glass windows, this is a first-of-its-kind venture for the luxury brand. Set across 1,430 sq m, this will be the first time they’ve set up shop in a church. Here guests can expect a members’ club space on the first floor for intimate tête-à-têtes and decadent dinner dates with a mezzanine overlooking it, as well as a downstairs library inspired by a Swedish drawing room. Of course, it wouldn’t be Soho House without a Cecconi’s, which has been built around a striking open kitchen.

Throughout the venue more than 70 art pieces exclusively acquired by artists born, based or trained in Sweden will be proudly displayed. With established names like Ranga Bley, Carsten Höller and Anna Bjerger exhibited alongside more emerging talent such as Afrang Nordlöf Malekian, Anna Choutova and Elina Birkehag. There’s also a distinctive colour palette that has been purposefully chosen to reflect Stockholm’s seasonal deep and soulful tones.

Soho House Stockholm joins the newly opened Mexico City outpost, which was the brand’s first foray into Latin America, as well as upcoming launches in Bangkok and Miami.
