Soho Home: get the highly coveted members' club look for less

There is no denying that Soho House – the famous members’ club with an ever-increasing number of outposts around the world – has made its mark when it comes to a creating a recognisable aesthetic in its houses.

Marrying style and comfort, tradition and trends, the brand counts many top interior designers among its alumni, among them Linda Boronkay.

The artful mish mash of styles, colours and textures have proved so popular that Soho House launched an interiors range, Soho Home, in 2016, becoming one of the most highly coveted homewares brands for a certain demographic of Londoners.

While you might splash out on the odd statement piece, a total Soho Home makeover is beyond many budgets. Luckily the high street is catching on to the brand’s aspirational popularity, making it possible to recreate the influential members’ club aesthetic for less by mixing in less expensive pieces made in a similar style.

“People shop across the spectrum of retailers when buying furniture and furnishings for their home,” explains Deirdre Mc Gettrick, CEO and co-founder of ufurnish.com, the online platform that lets your compare and shop furniture all on one website.

“I always compare it to fashion where my friends have Prada Handbags but wear Zara jeans – interiors are the exact same. We all have brands we really love – the Prada equivalent that we may only be able to afford one piece from – and then use high-street brands to complete our look.

“The expensive item could be the large cornerstone of the room – a coffee table or chair – or something smaller like cushions that add glamour to the finishing touches.”

Here, we round-up the designs that will help the cool but cash-strapped get the Soho Home vibe on a lower budget.

Dura Bench, Andrew Martin, £650

(Handout)

You can find similar bulging bouclé - inspired by the Vivienne sofa at White City House - at Soho Home for twice the price but this stylish alternative from Andrew Martin offers a similar aesthetic for a whole lot less.

Perfect as a bench at the end of the bed, a footstool or even a coffee table topped with covetable books.

Soho Floor Lamp, The Range, £69.99

(Handout)

The clue’s in the name with the Soho floor lamp from The Range, its black and white colourway and sleek, modern aesthetics reminiscent of similar floor lamp models at Soho Home.

The slimline frame is topped with a crisp shade to complete the Soho Home look at a tenth of the price, although admittedly if you hanker after an antique brass base, real leather detailing and hand stitching you will have to shell out.

Model 01, Swyft Home, £959

(Handout)

Mid-century design; check. Minimalist aesthetic; check. Option to upholster in a just-so shade of velvet; but of course.

Reminiscent of the sofas at DUMBO House in Brooklyn and a quarter of the price of a Soho Home sofa, Swyft Home’s Model 01 is also perfectly designed to enjoy with a martini or old-fashioned in hand (save on the sofa, splurge on the glassware).

Quarry Rug, Rugs Direct, £69.99

Soho Home’s Lorna rug combines earthy brown tones with soft hints of blue. It’s painstakingly hand-knotted in India over a period of six months with 65 knots per square-inch. For a fraction of the price Rugs Direct’s power-loomed Quarry Rug has a similar colourway to add a pleasing antique texture to any room.

Arabella Large Arch Wall Mirror, M&S, £139

(Handout)

With its brass border and ornate detailing, Marks & Spencer’s Arabella mirror has a look of the door frames at Soho House Paris, a timeless, pretty look that could work in a multitude of interiors.

Jude Fluted Desk, Atkin & Thyme, £949

(Handout)

The Jude desk from Atkin & Thyme has a gentleman’s club feel with a fluted wooden base design and deep-green marble top. Three drawers and a shallow, hidden drawer make for pretty decent storage, too.
