The news of Shakira's statue in Barranquilla made waves worldwide, even garnering attention from Japanese news outlets. Now, the city is planning to honor another of its most beloved and successful daughters: the Colombian actress, producer, and entrepreneur Sofía Vergara.
Fresh off her recent Golden Globe nomination, the film and television superstar is set to experience one of the most exciting moments of her career—right in her hometown.
Thanks to her remarkable achievements in the entertainment industry and her status as one of Colombia's top actresses, Vergara will soon have her own statue. It will stand alongside the one inaugurated in 2023 at the Gran Malecón del Río in honor of her fellow Barranquilla native, Shakira.
"Very soon, a new star will arrive at our Gran Malecón," announced Mayor Alejandro Char in a social media post, sharing a glimpse of the progress on Vergara's statue.
While Char didn't provide details about the statue's size or the date of its unveiling, he confirmed that sculptor Yino Márquez, who also created Shakira's statue, is working on this project. Colombians are hopeful that Vergara's statue will match Shakira's impressive six-and-a-half-meter (nearly 20-foot) figure.
This tribute is well-deserved. Vergara's acting and modeling career has brought significant acclaim, not only in Colombia but also in countries like Mexico and the United States. Her recent portrayal of Griselda Blanco in the Netflix biographical series 'Griselda' showcased her incredible talent and versatility.
A star-studded promenade
Although news of the statue recently went viral online, plans for the tribute have been known since 2023. That year, the mayor announced Vergara's selection as the next honoree for the new phase of the Gran Malecón, the same day Shakira's statue was unveiled in the presence of her family.
Vergara has yet to publicly comment on the project, but it's certain she must feel honored and grateful for this recognition. The initiative is part of an ongoing effort to celebrate Colombian artists who have achieved remarkable success over the years. Other stars who might eventually be honored include Juanes, Maluma, and J Balvin.
