Social welfare: Thousands of students due double payments with SUSI grant this month

Thousands of students across Ireland will receive a cash boost this month in line with the government’s recent Budget announcement.

While the cost of living in Ireland continues to lead concerns for many families, students forking out thousands of euros for their college tuition are also feeling the pressure.

In order to cushion that burden, students who are in receipt of the SUSI grant will be paid a bonus, which is also due in December.

The bonus will be paid out through the Student Universal Support Income (SUSI) scheme to all students who are currently receiving a maintenance grant.

SUSI provides a means-tested grant with various types of financial support for third-level students. It is given out on a tiered system based on the total income in each student's household and the number of dependent children living there.

For some students, SUSI pays a contribution towards their tuition fees, for others on slightly lower incomes, they cover the full €3,000 college fee.

The only students who will benefit from this month's extra payment are those on lower incomes who receive a maintenance grant - which is a monthly sum paid directly into their bank accounts to be used for living expenses.

The amount that each person receives varies depending on many different factors such as income, family size, how close they live to their college and more.

Each student will get paid double what they normally receive each month, and do not need to take any action to receive the boost - it will arrive automatically.
