Social welfare recipients could face deductions to €200 bonus payment

The Department of Social Protection has warned people that their cost of living payment could be subject to previously agreed deductions.

The payment was issued on April 24 as part of the government's ongoing efforts to combat rising costs. People who have been in receipt of a social welfare payment for over 12 months are eligible for the bonus.

The Department has released a statement on its website clarifying that some welfare recipients could see a small deduction when receiving the payment this week. The €200 sum was set to land in bank accounts at the same time as normal social welfare payments for most recipients entitled to other payments.

However, some people will receive the €200 payment separate from other welfare entitlements. The Department explained that both methods could be subject to deductions due to previous overpaying or an agreement with An Post.

They wrote in a statement: "In these cases, the normal weekly payment and the cost of living bonus payment will both include any deduction which you have previously agreed to, such as An Post’s household budget and overpayment deductions."

An Post's household budget allows customers to pay their utility bills and local authority rents directly from their social welfare payments. Customers of the post office can access this service, which can also be used to pay off credit union loans.

The €200 payment is set to be issued to over a million people this week. Many people were granted the money on April 24 but others received it on the usual day they get social welfare entitlements, alongside their usual payment.
