Social welfare Ireland: Thousands have weekly payment delayed after issue with An Post accounts

Some social welfare recipients did not receive their payments on time this week after an issue with An Post accounts.

The Department of Social Protection said a number of customers with An Post accounts did not receive their welfare benefit on Thursday as planned.

It did not specify what the exact reason for the issue was, only to add that the postal service was working to resolve it.

A spokesperson said on Thursday night: "Some DSP customers with An Post EFT accounts have not received their weekly payment today. An Post has assured us that they are in the process of resolving this. We will update you with further information asap."

In a subsequent update, the department confirmed that the problem had been solved and that the payment would be made into recipients' accounts by 8am on Friday.

A spokesperson said: "Update on payments for DSP customers with An Post accounts. Payment will be in all customers' accounts by 8.00am Friday, March 4."

It comes as thousands of social welfare claimants are facing a big change to their payments from next week.

People in receipt of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment are set to see their income cut again within days.

The phasing out of the PUP continues as the social welfare benefit comes to an end in April.

Thousands of people continue to receive the payment that was introduced in March 2020 in response to Covid-19.

However, these members of the public are set to see their income slashed once again.

From March 8, anyone still in receipt of the PUP will move to a weekly rate of €208.

This will apply to those individuals who earned €400 or more before the pandemic.

Following the changes in less than a week's time, a final plan for the PUP will come into effect on April 5.

From that date, PUP recipients will start transitioning to standard jobseeker terms, and if eligible, will move onto a jobseeker payment.
